Content Creator Rebecca Talks to Freewebstore About Her Online Business

Meet Rebecca Tyler-Squires, a content creator who has found her true passion in crafting and yarnbombing! For Rebecca, this is more than just a hobby. She has a long term health condition, so when her health limits her ability to go out, it’s a way for her to stay connected with the outside world.

Addicted to the joy that comes from creating beautiful handmade pieces, Rebecca pours her heart and soul into every project she undertakes. From intricate crochet designs to vibrant yarn installations, she never ceases to amaze with her creativity!

1. Please tell us a bit about your online store and how it all started.

I’m a disabled content creator, who is addicted to crafting. I’ve always wanted to be able to make money from it, so I took my yarnbombing and my random acts of craft kindness, and leapt into business with them. My store is mostly yarn items, which are handmade by me.

I was in Oxfordshire, England. I was (and still am) a part time Open University law student. I’m largely housebound due to my disability ME/CFS, with limited energy.  On top of that, I’m a mum to a five-year-old daughter, and an owner of two dogs and seven pet rats.

2. Why did you decide to start your own business? What inspired you to start?

I like to think my makes go out into the world for me, as I often cannot. It is my way of being able to stay connected with, and affect the outside world, all from my sofa.

3. Do you have any advice for new store owners?

Post and post and post online! My energy has dipped and because of that, so has my posting. It really has an effect on sales!

4. What were the results you were hoping to achieve when you first signed up for a freewebstore?

I wanted to be able to sell my products without losing most of the money to seller fees. It has definitely met that target for me.

5. Why is that important to you?

My products take a lot of time to make, so once I factor minimum wage and my materials in, there isn’t much left!

6. What is your most popular product?

My twist headbands! They’ve been popular at craft fairs and online.

7. If you could choose one magic power, what would you go for?

I’d like to know what people think, but for obvious reasons, that needs an on/off switch! People don’t want to criticise your work, but without that, how do I know what people like?

8. And finally, where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time?

I’m wishing for the big and rare ME/CFS cure, but if not that, then I’ll hopefully have my law degree and this business will have absolutely taken off to earn me a full time wage.
