New Mum Amy Coupland’s Career Opportunity

New mum Amy Coupland found it hard to go back to work full-time after she’d had her daughter. She wanted to give her the best life possible, as every parent does. Amy needed a job suitable for new mums – something part-time that allowed her to spend time with her family.

Amy began making wax melts to create a warm and inviting atmosphere in her home. This gave her the opportunity to hone her creative talents and also give her the mental escape she needed whilst she was going through a stressful time. Soon her friends and family wanted her to make more for them.

Her business gained traction when she shared what she was doing on social media. But, she needed something that gave people reassurance that her business was genuine. Amy set up an eCommerce website to give her business a professional platform. She gets regular sales from her website each month. Amy shares her advice with us to help other people in a similar situation.

1. Tell us a bit about your online store.

I had my daughter Olivia in August 2019 and found it SO hard to go back to work full time, especially after having so long off work with her due to covid. My job was very artistic, I made prosthetic limbs, so when I had to leave to find a new part-time job I also wanted to find a hobby for myself. Along came wax melts, I made them just to make my own home smell good. It all went from there, friends started buying, then friends of friends, and it just took off for me. I started with the usual social media pages, but I felt I needed something that gave people who didn’t know me some reassurance that my little business was genuine. After a lot of research, Freewebstore popped up and was perfect for me and for what I needed! MayRose started with just one product and about 8 different scents, we now handmake a wide range of items and have over 50 scents to pick from.

When I first started MayRose Handmade, I was working part-time at Greggs, which isn’t the most artistic of careers! I was going through a stressful time at home and needed a hobby to keep me occupied and let my artistic side free.

I started MayRose because I want my daughter to be proud of her mummy, and I want to give her the best life possible as every mum does. It’s so hard for mums to work full time, but it’s also so hard financially for mums not to work full time. This was the perfect little business for me, and thankfully all the hard work has paid off for me!

3. Do you have any advice for new store owners?

My advice to any new store owner is, just go for it! Give it your all, and it will pay off.

4. What were the results you were hoping to achieve when you first signed up for a freewebstore

When I signed up to Freewebstore, I was genuinely thinking I might get 1 order every other month, but this isn’t the case and I’m so proud of the orders we get! Everyone makes me do a happy dance.

5. What is your most popular product?

My most popular product has got to be my wax melts, the main reason MayRose started. We do a pack of wax hearts and call them ‘Loving hearts’ and people really do seem to love them!

6. If you could choose one magic power, what would you go for?

I’d love to have powers to read minds, especially with my 3-year-old because I never know what she’s thinking!

7. And finally, where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time?

Probably the same as everybody else, to be rich and live a carefree life! In all seriousness, I’d be over the moon if MayRose got to the point where I could have my own shop and warehouse, I’ll keep working hard and see where we end up!

Thanks for inspiring us, Amy!
