Protecting Your Business During A Recession

I promise this blog post will not be as doom and gloom as the title suggests, but we do need to face the fact that it does look like we are heading into a recession.   I thought it would be an excellent time to make sure you are prepared when the recession arrives as a business/store owner.

What is a recession?

In economics, a recession is a business cycle contraction when there is a general decline in economic activity. Recessions generally occur when there is a widespread drop in spending.  So what does this mean to you as a store owner?  Well, that all depends on whether you are a glass-half-full or half-empty kind of person.  Now is a great time to look at your overheads, cut out the fat, and streamline your business to ensure it is in the best possible shape it can be in heading into these uncertain times.

Focus on your overheads

The same with any expenditure, you need to ask yourself.  Do you need it?  Can you afford it?  Is there a cheaper alternative?   Create a list with all your overheads and go through each one asking those questions.  The chances are, there are real savings to be made.  They may seem like small savings, but extrapolate them over a year and you will start to see real benefits.

Cut Costs, not quality

Cheaper is not always better.  If an expenditure adds value to your business, then it is a fully justified expense.  Maybe speak to that supplier or service to see if they could do you a deal as a longstanding customer of theirs.  If you don’t ask, you don’t get!

Don’t bury your head

The easy thing to do is to do nothing, and just cross your fingers and hope that things will be ok.  Now is the time to be proactive.   Start looking at the price of your own products in your store.   Could you offer any discounts?   Are there items you are overstocked with, that can be heavily discounted?  Your shoppers will be looking for that bargain!  Make sure they stop by your store to make that purchase.

Recessions are temporary

Now the good news!   Recessions are always temporary, and things will soon get back to normal.   If you have followed the good practices mentioned above, you will come out of the recession in a much healthier position than you were when you went into it.
