We asked Glendola for her advice on how startups can grow their content marketing on Pinterest.
Pinterest: A Visual Search Engine
Pinterest is a visual platform for image-sharing and social media services. Users of various genres share ideas and inspiration. Pinterest is different from Instagram. It is its own environment with its dedicated and enthusiastic followers. What makes it unique is that Pinterest has a “visual search engine”. Users receive suggested content based on related images, rather than on keywords.

For those who aren’t familiar, Pinterest consists of “Pins” and “Boards”. A Pin is an image that has links to a website or can be uploaded by the user. Other users can save this image to their own Board, a process known as “repinning”. This allows users to create their own collection of images based on content that inspires them or creates a mood. Collections can also relate to themes such as travel, weddings, or fashion.

Glendola recommends the best way to increase your reach is to learn which posts give you the greatest number of interactions – or Pins. To do this, you can sign up for a business account. Pinterest launched business accounts in 2012 allowing businesses to either convert their existing personal accounts into business accounts or start from scratch.
“It is more feasible to get a business account since you’re able to gather more analytical data on your pins and boards. You’re able to see what products are trending and those products that aren’t receiving any attention at all.”
You can upgrade to a free Pinterest Business Account, by going to the Settings in your Pinterest Account.
“…A great thing about Pinterest is, the more people save your pins, the algorithm favors these pins; thus putting them in front of a wider audience. So if you view your analytics and a pin has a lot of saves, you are most likely to see increased views as time goes by, and maybe even more saves. I really love this feature, because a small group of saves (prospective buyers) can slowly grow the recognition of your brand, without knowing it…” – Glendola.
Size is Everything
If you are familiar with posting on social media, you will know that images look better if they are a certain size. Pinterest is no different. Glendola has been experimenting and has found that the best size to post on Pinterest is one similar to that of an Instagram Story – if you want to increase your reach.
“A lot of times, you would hear people say that your pins must be very attractive and creative, which may be true, but it is also very appealing to the eyes when the images are long and not square (like most Instagram photos)…” – Glendola
Product Images – Glendola’s Tips
As with your website, a product image that is taken well and fits with your branding can make all the difference. Glendola explains how we can make a simple product image look more visually appealing.
“…In regards to creative pins, it is still possible if you only have basic product images. These product images can be combined with awesome graphics, colours, and other promotional media to make boards; and these boards can be labeled as promotional material (for your business).
Note: In this case, the product images and promotional materials would be on different boards. (Organization is better).” – Glendola
